Being Physically and Mentally Ready to Fly

The December 2016 issue of Aeronotes includes an article about CASA's recently released Pilot Wellbeing page on their website which addresses a very important pre-flight check: an honest appraisal of your physical & mental fitness to fly.

In today's hectic life it is not uncommon to encounter issues relating to fatigue, distractions, stress, hydration and so on. It is also important to ensure we are not flying while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs (as per CAR 256 and its "8 hour rule," often paraphrased as "8 hours bottle to burner"). Identifying these various issues is important when assessing whether you should go flying as it is important to be mentally alert and physically capable through out your entire flight.

We recommend that you take the time to review CASA's Pilot Wellbeing web page and that you include an honest appraisal of your fitness to fly as part of your pre-inflation checklist.
